👤 Biography of Pope Leo XIV
Early Life and Education
Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Robert Prevost was raised in a devout Catholic family. He pursued higher education at Villanova University and later earned a Doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome.
Religious Vocation
Prevost joined the Order of Saint Augustine and was ordained a priest in 1982. His early ministry took him to Peru, where he served in various capacities, including parish pastor, diocesan official, and seminary teacher, from 1985 to 1998.
Leadership Roles
In 2001, he was elected Prior General of the Order of Saint Augustine, serving two consecutive terms until 2013. In 2015, he was appointed Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru, and in 2023, Pope Francis appointed him as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America. He was created a cardinal in the same year.
